One million visitors expected at Putrajaya floral fest - Nation | The Star Online

PUTRAJAYA: An estimated one million visitors are expected to flock to the administrative capital to see the dazzling array of flowers that will be on display at the Putrajaya Floria 2013 from June 22 till 30.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the organisers were optimistic of passing the one million mark based on the increasing turnout in each successive year since the festival was launched six years ago.

“Every year we see an increase in participants and I'm confident that over the nine days of the festival we will get more than one million visitors,” he said after the soft launch of the festival here.

Last year, an estimated 800,000 people visited Putrajaya to see the hundreds of thousands of flowers and plants put on display in the many exhibitions set up around the Putrajaya lake.

The organisers of this year's Floria - with the orchid in centre stage - have yet to set a revenue target, but Tengku Adnan pointed out that the multiplier effect is obvious.

“This event will give a big multiplier effect to the economy of Putrajaya. If you have one million visitors, and each visitor spends an average of RM50, you are looking at RM50mil generated over the nine days,” he said.

This year's Floria, themed “Orchid Tropical Treasure”, will showcase more than 200 orchid species including cultivated and hybrid species, apart from over 400,000 different flowers and plants.

There will also be over 200 events that will run over the nine-day festival, including a Garden Bazaar and Horticulture Market, orchid competition, photography and watercolour competition, and the Tourism Floral Parade 2013 themed “Magic of the Night”.

There will also be 23 international participants from 18 countries South Africa, Australia, Chile, China, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Entrance is free and the festival is open from 9am to 10pm on Mondays to Thursdays and from 9am to midnight on Fridays to Sundays.
